“My mom is 70 years old. She complains about being bored at home. “It’s the same routine every day”, she says. What do I tell her to do, so she feels a little excited every day?”
Boredom is a signal that we’re not meaningfully engaged. It tells us to stop what we’re doing, and do it better – or to do something else.
Listen to your emotions. If it says boredom – then it’s time to do things differently, to do something more, or to learn something new.
3- steps to deal with boredom
1. Find a routine
We are creatures of habit. We crave routines. Routine gives a structure to our day and gives us a sense of security. When you have a routine drawn out, you are more engaged in the activity.
This loss of routine can lead to boredom.
Action to take:
- Create routines in your day.
- Create a morning, afternoon, and evening routine and structure your day.
2. Learn/try something new
Boredom usually means we are not doing enough. So take the urge and do or learn something new. It could mean trying out new cuisine, indulging in some home décor, trying your hand at gardening or it could mean signing up on social media.
Studies show that when you try or learn something new, you develop new skills and knowledge. This helps you in living a happy and meaningful life.
Action to take:
- List down at least 3 new activities you will do in this week.
3. Connect with others
We are social animals, and we love engaging and connecting with others.
Action to Take:
- List down 3 people you will connect with, in this week
Remember, Boredom means you lack interest or have lost the capacity to enjoy. You may postpone taking any step that will help you rid of the boredom.
But remember, as I mentioned we are creatures of habit. So take tiny steps to beat boredom.
Get yourself moving by taking a small step.
For example; if you can’t get yourself to do a complete workout regime, get up in the morning and do stretches. If you want to try your hand at cooking, start looking at recipe videos.
Actions to take:
- Choose an activity
- Break it down into steps
- Take the first step
For example, If you want to try your hand at painting, list down the steps to paint. That would be to get materials, learn what and how to paint, and sit down to paint.
Start with step 1: Gather the materials and keep them in one place
Step 2: watch some YouTube tutorials on painting
Step 3: take 10 minutes out of your schedule to do basic sketching.
This process will make it easier for you to pursue any activity.
If you feel the emotion of boredom, take action. Saying “I’m bored “will not solve the issue. Take up an activity, learn new skills, and keep yourself mentally engaged.
